Learn to Dance Salsa on Holiday

Learn to Dance Salsa - Warner Leisure Hotels Holiday with Dance Classes. Salsa is one of the fastest growing dance crazes and so enjoyable to do – an exhilarating fusion of Caribbean steps, South American music and African rhythms… reinterpreted in New York and now enthusiastically enjoyed all over the world.

So why not put on your dancing shoes and join expert dance tutors as they take you through some of the slinkiest and sexiest moves on the dance floor. If you’ve got any sense of rhythm, this is the dance for you – and no, you don’t have to be super fit!

The workshops – 2 x three-hour sessions - will help you take your first steps with confidence within a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Teaching will be undertaken in achievable stages that will build into a basic routine that can be easily repeated.

If you’re wondering, while the Salsa is usually a partner dance, there are recognised solo steps and some forms are danced in groups of couples, with frequent exchanges of partner. Salsa can be danced to a wide range of music styles – the beat behind the music is what matters, and the tempo can range from slow at about 120 beats per minute to its fastest at around 180 beats per minute. The partners usually occupy a fixed area of the dance floor, rotating around one another and exchanging places. And the name? Well, Salsa is Spanish for sauce - so say no more!

Drawing From Nature - Art Holiday

Inspired by the wonders of nature. Artists have been inspired by nature since painting and drawing began: there is never a shortage of materials to recreate and each new plant or creature presents its own demands.

Our expert host for this break, Neville Walters, has spent decades working as a freelance professional illustrator and he will teach you proven techniques to help you to create careful and accurate drawings – starting with the way you actually look at a plant.

The course is open to all standards – from beginners through to people keen to hone their drawing skills; and over two full day sessions, Neville will help you apply the lessons and tips he is passing on. You’ll have a wide choice of plants and flowers to choose from, as well as a range of different drawing materials.

“So many people are now finding the time to take up art as a hobby,” says Neville, “and drawing from nature is a great way to start – you’re literally following in the footsteps of artists like Beatrix Potter who was able to draw what she saw realistically but also with great feeling.

“After many years as an illustrator, I am still finding new things to draw, new challenges to rise to. I hope that, after this course, people will feel inspired to take their pens, pencils and paper – perhaps even their watercolours and oils - and go out into the countryside or garden and make this the starting point of an engrossing and very rewarding pursuit.”

The sport with a cast of thousands! Watching an experienced fly fisherman cannot fail to intrigue and fascinate you: the action of casting itself is intricate and almost balletic; and to see a fish being patiently reeled in is to witness an ancient battle between man and nature.

However, it is an intricate skill that can be acquired, even by complete beginners – as our expert tutor Steve Rhodes will demonstrate. And of course it’s a sport where the spoils of victory include a delicious meal of freshly caught fish!

Some of the finest fishing waters in the country are to be found just a short distance from Nidd Hall and – after a morning indoors session covering the principles of fly fishing, such as tying and casting, and important issues including health and safety - Steve will take you, as part of a very small group, for an afternoon of fly fishing on still waters.

All fishing equipment will be provided: you will just need to bring along suitable waterproof clothing, sunglasses and a hat.

It certainly looks complicated and its dedicated followers spend years perfecting their technique, but it is a skill that can be acquired, even by complete beginners – as our expert tutor Derek Turner will demonstrate. And of course it’s a sport where the spoils of victory include a delicious meal of freshly caught fish!

We have some fine fishing waters close by to the Castle and, after a morning’s indoors session learning basics such as how to tie and cast, Derek will take you for an afternoon of fly fishing under his expert guidance. The next day, after video analysis of your technique, you’ll go for a further afternoon’s fishing to apply all the lessons you have learned.

Learn to Bell Ring on Holiday

How about this for a holiday with a difference? Learn to Bell Ring - Campanology Holiday in North Wales with Warner Leisure Hotels.

Music that rings a bell. Have you ever listened to the wonderful sounds of church bells ringing and thought that you would love to try your hand at that? Well, now you can.

Absolutely no experience is needed as expert, Dr Kevin Mason, shows you the ropes and explains the ins and outs (or is it ups and downs?) of bell ringing. You'll practice in the lovely Victorian Marble Church of St Margaret in Bodelwyddan. The church, built between 1856 and 1859, has a fine set of eight bells, and your expert tutor will explain the different sorts of ringing patterns involved in change-ringing and you’ll be given a demonstration of the differences between how a wedding, church service and other events are marked.

You’ll then be encouraged to pull the ropes yourself; and if you find you are making good progress you can then go on to visit other bell towers in the locality. In addition, you will enjoy a tour of St Asaph Cathedral at St Asaph. The course takes place over three days, including several evening sessions.We do hope you’ll go away with the confidence in your campanological skills to check out your own local bell ringing groups with a view to joining their ranks. You’ll find they are usually very sociable groups where visiting other churches (by way of their neighbouring hostelry!) is a regular activity.

British Weather...
...Is unpredictable to say the least although if you study the forecasts and the way that depressions move in the UK, it becomes more predictable!! Generally between April and October it is more dry than wet, with temperatures (again generally) 16-28 degrees Celsius (60-80 degrees Fahrenheit) at sea level. However, Britain has frontal weather and you can have spells of rain lasting a day or so. Mountains generate their own weather, and with wind-chill mild temperatures at sea level can be bitterly cold at 2000 ft.
