Antarctic Peninsula Expedition Cruise

Antarctic Peninsula - An Expedition Cruise with the Adventure Company. The Great White Continent is still a remote and isolated place, the last frontier and the last truly pristine region on earth. Huge icebergs rise out of the water and glaciers make their tireless march into the ocean. Wildlife abounds from raucous seals and calling seabirds to immense penguin colonies.

Telephone 0845 609 0837 for more details

The only realistic approach is still by sea and we have chosen to use the expedition ships, the Clipper Adventurer or the Lyubov Orlova, to ensure the best possible experience of this extraordinary and untouched part of the world. Sturdy Zodiac craft will whisk you around this ice world enabling you to either experience the extraordinary landscape from the water or to land and encounter it close up. An experienced expedition team will be with you at all times, helping to unlock the secrets of this far-flung continent. It’s the ultimate destination for all travellers and a genuine once in a lifetime trip.

Heading South

From Ushuaia, the world most southerly city, you board your converted icebreaker and head out along the Beagle Channel into the Drake Passage. Your destination is the rugged and beautiful wilderness of Antarctica – the white continent. Followed by wandering albatross and storm petrels the anticipation grows as you catch sight of your first giant iceberg and finally reach land.

Antarctica revealed

Many superlatives are used to describe Antarctica but nothing prepares you for its awe-inspiring beauty. Sculpted aquamarine icebergs float beneath vast glaciers and soaring cliffs provide the backdrop to abandoned whaling and research stations. Whilst the scenery is truly spectacular, for many the magical moments are those spent watching penguins run and slide on the ice, seals play or whales break the surface of the water.

Day 1/2: Fly to Ushuaia via Buenos Aires

Our local agent will meet you in Buenos Aires and facilitate transfers either to your hotel or (as often happens) you will need to transfer between the international and domestic airport, which is the other side of Buenos Aires city (approx. 45-mins drive). Here you will board your flight to Ushuaia. On arrival in Ushuaia you will be met and transferred to your overnight hotel. The evening and next morning are free to relax and recover from your journey. You will then be met at your hotel and transferred to the dock to join the cruise.

Day 3: Embark Ship - Ushuaia

You will board your ship in the afternoon in the town of Ushuaia. Located on the Beagle Passage in Tierra del Fuego, this charming town has a spectacular setting. Cabin on board ship – 10/11 nights (BD)

Day 4/5: Drake Passage
Settle in on board as you head south across the Drake Passage. You will soon leave Cape Horn behind and head out into the open sea, escorted perhaps by petrels and albatrosses. Take your time to find your way about the ship and go onto the bridge, which is fully open for passenger access, where you can see the experienced crew at work. There will be plenty of opportunities to listen to the talks and lectures given by the specialist expedition team and discuss their experiences in the Polar region with them. Once you cross the Antarctic Convergence there will be the possibility of passing icebergs and, conditions permitting, late on day three the Captain may well try to make a landing in the South Shetlands at Aitcho. (Bx2, Lx2, Dx2)

Day 6-8: Antarctic Peninsula

On day four you will arrive off the Antarctic Peninsula and its surrounding islands. With a backdrop of high ice-capped mountains, crevassed glaciers and ice-filled fjords this is Antarctica in all its majesty. You will explore the region taking advantage of the crew and expedition team’s experience. The route will be dependent on weather or sea conditions and information passed from other ships in the area or polar stations.

You are likely to be able to join two Zodiac expeditions a day, in the company of the ship’s specialists, exploring the ice floes or stepping ashore onto Antarctica itself!
The itinerary will vary but there are a number of places that are particular favourites. You take beautiful transits through the channels and straits such as Lemaire, Gerlache and Neumayer with their towering rock faces and spectacular glaciers – possibly the highlight of the cruise.

Bring your swimming gear for a dip in the hot springs of Pendulum Cove and you can post your letters at the historic research station of Port Lockroy. Here, as well as enjoying the thriving penguin colonies, the former British scientific station has been renovated to serve as one of the most isolated and intriguing museums in the world. We also hope to visit Paradise Bay, Petermann Island, Cuverville Island, Vernadsky Station and Neko Harbour.

There are many sites with an abundance of wildlife and with the expedition team in attendance you really can understand this incredible environment. The penguin rookeries are a lively highlight with large numbers of adelie, gentoo and chinstrap noisily grouped together and as you cruise among the icebergs you will hopefully see seals both in the water and on the ice. The most common are the fur, leopard, crabeater, weddel and mighty elephant seals. At all times the ship will be on the lookout for mammals at the top of the food-chain and with the wealth of krill around the Peninsula there is a likelihood of seeing minke and humpback whales.

There is so much to see and the excitement of a Zodiac expedition, with perhaps a chance encounter with an orca pod. This will be followed by a discussion on board with one of the expedition team while clutching a hot chocolate - or something stronger! The experiences are unpredictable but many will no doubt be unforgettable. (Bx3,Lx3,Dx3)

Day 9/10: South Shetland Islands

You visit Whaler's Bay on Deception Island, an active volcanic island with thermal waters welling up under the black sand. You also visit Half Moon Island, part of a dormant volcanic caldera where chinstrap penguins abound and the views can be spectacular. (Bx2,Lx2,Dx2)

Day 11/12: Drake Passage

After five days in and around the Antarctic Peninsula it’s time to head north to ‘civilisation’. Experiences will no doubt be relived and discussed with new friends and the expedition team will recap on some of the wonders seen. The icebergs will be left behind and soon Tierra del Fuego will loom ahead. (Bx2,Lx2,Dx2)

Day 13: Disembark Ushuaia

Morning disembarkation from your ship in Ushuaia. Clients flying home with us will transfer to the airport from the ship and take a morning flight back to Buenos Aires. You will be met on arrival and transfer to your hotel. On all cruises you spend one night in Buenos Aires - a chance to enjoy the sights and sounds of the vibrant city of Tango.(B)

Cinque Terre Walking Holiday in Italy

Cinque Terre - Coastal Walking Holiday on the Italian Riviera with Sherpa Expeditions. From GBP377.

Enjoy some of the finest coastal walking in Europe on this most beautiful section of the Italian Riviera. The five charming villages of the Chinquay Terray, Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore have been praised by artists and poets for centuries. They have celebrated the tiny aquamarine inlets that serve as fishing harbours and the ancient terraces rising steeply out of the coastal crags in words and pictures. Now you can discover all this for yourselves!

This popular shorter holiday will appeal to easy going walkers who are happy to be flexible and juggle their hiking itineraries according to their mood or the prevailing climate. There are gentle coastal strolls and strenuous hikes alike, into the surrounding hills through the precarious cliffside vineyards and scented pine forests. You can visit the churches, viewpoints, seasides and beaches of the neighbouring towns, returning to our centre in Monterosso al Mare via the efficient local rail service that links the towns of the Cinque Terre with the beach resort of Levanto and train hub at La Spezia. From here there is convenient access to Pisa and its airport. From April through to September there is also a ferry service between the towns.

To find out more visit the Sherpa Expeditions website

The tour is particularly recommended for spring and autumn departures, where the crowds have cleared and the temperatures are amiable for walking. (Note that a National Parks card - not included - has to be bought locally €25 approx, but acts as a pass on the trains along the Cinque Terre).

Inn to Inn 6 days
Duration: 5 nights/6 days
Tour Code: JCT
Grade: Easy - Moderate
Day Stages: Upto 20km. Choose from a range of walks.
March - Mid December
Note: Avoid mid July - Mid August as it can be very hot

Accommodation
5 nights/6 days - Your 3 star hotel is named after the young lady who runs it, off the winding medieval streets of Monterosso, just a couple of minutes from its tiny beach. The dinners here offer a taste of the local ‘cucina’ and regional flavours often prevail, including delicious seafood platters. Perhaps washed down with a Cinque Terre Domain wine such as ‘Sciacchetra’ which is made with sun dried grapes and thus has a higher sugar content.

Sherpa Notes

The walks are generally well waymarked.

Amalfi Coast Walking Holiday, Italy

The Amalfi Coast - Unrivalled Italian Coastal Walking Holiday with Sherpa Expeditions

A land of everlasting Spring, golden light, charming villages and monasteries, watch towers, isolated farmsteads, with flower-strewn coastal paths threading them all together. There are also areas of near wilderness along the Monti Lattari just behind the coast, with impressive cliffs rising up to 1400m whilst omnipresent is the blue of the Mediterranean.

After arriving in Amalfi, and perhaps a swim to wash away the tiredness from your journey, our first walk takes us to the ‘Valle dei Mulini’, the valley of the watermills, and on up to the little village of Pontone and the medieval Torre dello Zirro. The return stretch back to Amalfi is very scenic with spectacular viewpoints. Including a visit to beautiful Ravello.

Next we walk into the Valle delle Ferriere, one of southern Italy’s most beautiful nature reserves, passing beneath the towering cliffs close to some little waterfalls. From Pogerola a beautiful medieval muletrack curves down to Amalfi, amidst lemon groves and maquis.

The tour continues along a paved muletrack dating back towards the 9th century, to the imposing monastery of Santa Rosa. The route descends to the coast and the spectacular inlet at Furore. From here we walk along to the church of Sant’Elia into the Valley of Praia and then to the coastal town of Praiano. Next we follow the famous ‘Sentiero degli Dei’ (Footpath of the Gods), with views of Capri before descending to precariously perched Positano, one of the most charming villages of the coast.

Finally we take a local bus back up to Montepertuso where we start a circular walk of the Positano valley following ancient footpaths through the forest with marvelous viewpoints. We climb towards Santa Maria al Castello, the old fortress defending the narrow valley between the Amalfi and the Sorrentine side of the peninsula and overlooking both the Gulf of Salerno and the Gulf of Naples. The walk then descends via a forest station to Positano.

On the 11 day tour we stay in Sorrento which has good access to some other walks, and is also a convenient place for an excursion to the beautiful Isle of Capri.
This classy, beautiful walk follows steep-stepped routes on some days to get you quickly to the viewpoints.

Duration: 7 nights/8 days or 10 nights/11 days

Grade: Easy to Moderate

Itinerary

YOUR RESORT

The pretty resort of Chiavari near the mouth of the Entella River on the Italian Riviera is surrounded by dramatic mountains as they sweep down to the sparkling, deep blue sea. This delightful seaside town is a fabulous base from which to set out on our guided walks to discover the scenic charms, stunning coastlines and lovely villages of the Cinque Terre. Then you can stroll into the centre to browse through the shops and relax and watch the world go by from one of the welcoming bars and restaurants.

INCLUDED ACTIVITIES & WALKS:
Cinque Terre National Park
The Cinque Terre refers to five picturesque villages which perch on the cliffs high above the Mediterranean – Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglio, Manarola and Riomaggiore. We travel by train from Chiavari via Manarola to Riomaggiore, from where we follow the cliff path through the villages (approx. 6 hours’ walk). The scenery is truly inspiring and there are spectacular views all around. You can return by train from any of the five villages if you wish.
Rapallo & Portofino
Travel by train to Rapallo, then by bus to Ruta di Camogli, from where we begin an exhilarating walk through wooded hills (approx. 4 hours’ walk). We then enjoy a boat trip to the famous and quite beautiful town of Portofino. The view of the colourful houses overlooking the tiny harbour is the archetypal Italian Riviera vista. We continue to the attractive town of Santa Margherita Ligure for a stroll before returning by train to Chiavari.

Portovenere & Palmaria

A full day excursion by train and boat featuring a visit to the lovely fishing village of Portovenere and a sightseeing walk on the island of Palmaria (approx. 1 hour’s walk). Portovenere has a long and proud history, which has bequeathed the town a superb collection of ancient monuments, such as the Doria Castle and the Church of St. Peter.

CHOICE OF OPTIONAL EXCURSIONS

The Sanctuary of Montallegro

This half day excursion starts with a train journey to the pretty resort town of Rapallo, then a cable car ride up to the Sanctuary of Montallegro, perched high above the town with wonderful views across the surrounding area. You will walk back down the hill through the woods to the coast, where there’s the chance to do a little exploring in Rapallo. You will return to Chiavari this afternoon.

Genoa

This fascinating city combines a great history with its role as Italy’s most important port. Throughout the Middle Ages, Genoa was a great power, its success built upon its fleet. It is today a bustling centre, filled with historic gems in the old town.

Apuane Alps Walking Holiday - Sherpa Expeditions

Apuane Alps - Mountain Walking In Tuscany with Sherpa Expeditions.

This remote area of northern Tuscany has an old world charm of its own. It is a world away from the towns and rolling hills of the south. The Apuane Alps are covered by a web of trails providing routes from hamlet to hilltop and beyond. You will experience superb scenery, mountain wilderness and tranquillity.

This trek has many attractive ingredients, from wide mountain vistas, to remote hamlets surrounded by forest and mountain scenery. There are few other walkers and the villagers make you feel truly welcome.
From the small unassuming town of Fornaci di Barga we enter the Apuane forests, climbing up through chestnut woods and dropping down through vineyards to the ancient village of Verni. Here we enter an impressive series of limestone massifs that rise up to 2000m within a few kms of the sea, the Apuanes are famous for their scenery of white marble towers, abysses and the largest cave system in Italy.

En route to Trassilico (732m) we stumble across remote chapels, and abandoned farms. We climb Monte Forato (1223m) visit the ‘Grotta del Vento’ with its subterranean lakes and ‘living’ stalagmites and stalactites. From Fornovolasco there is a long day to make the optional ascent of Pania della Croce (1860m), the view from the summit is quite magnificent. Before dropping down to the old hermitage at Calomini and back to Fornaci.

Your Accommodation

Accommodation in the Apuane Alps is generally of a more simple standard than one might expect in the more popular parts of Tuscany. It is however clean and comfortable.
We spend our first and last night in Fornaci di Barga at a centrally located modern 3* hotel. Then a small, pension in the village of Verni which was once a Roman colony. The pension has a terrace with a wonderful view of Trassilico.

Our next three nights are spent in Fornovolasco at a typical small unclassified hotel, the rooms are simply furnished and share a bathroom. The penultimate night is spent in a small apartment with its own private bathroom just 100m from the Monastery at the Eremo di Calomini, an ancient hermitage site carved into rock walls, and a superb restaurant.

Sherpa Notes
