Fly Fishing Experience with Warner Leisure Hotels

There are few more artistic sports than fly fishing.  Watching an experienced fly fisherman cannot fail to intrigue and fascinate you.  The action of casting itself is intricate and almost balletic; and to see a fish being patiently reeled in is to witness an ancient battle between man and nature.

Fly fishing has a long and proud history.  It was first described in literature some 2,000 years ago and the modern version is believed to have begun in Scotland as long ago as the 15th century.

It certainly looks complicated and its dedicated followers spend years perfecting their technique, but it is a skill that can be acquired, even by complete beginners - as our expert tutor Derek Turner will demonstrate. And of course it's a sport where the spoils of victory include a delicious meal of freshly caught fish!

We have some fine fishing waters close by to the Castle and, after a morning's indoors session learning basics such as how to tie and cast, Derek will take you for an afternoon of fly fishing under his expert guidance. The next day, after video analysis of your technique, you'll go for a further afternoon's fishing to apply all the lessons you have learned. All fishing equipment will be provided: you will just need to bring along suitable waterproof clothing, sunglasses and a hat.

To ensure you receive the intensive tuition needed, the group is small in size - so book early to avoid disappointment.

Fencing Experience with Warner Leisure Hotels

If you have ever thrilled to the swashbuckling exploits of Errol Flynn as he clashed swords with the Sheriff of Nottingham, or watched in admiration as modern-day Olympic competitors thrust and parry, then you should try this exciting sport with one-to-one tuition from our expert fencing tutors.

And no, you don't have to be a super-fit film star or athlete to really enjoy yourself and gain a solid grounding in this most ancient of sports! The sword is one of the oldest of weapons - Egyptian frescoes from around 1200BC show fencing in action, and when the sword became the principal weapon for the Greek and Roman soldiers, swordsmanship became a sport as well as a vital means of self-defence.

The ability to demonstrate speed, skill, dexterity - and not a little bravery -with a sword has always been considered an indication of manliness and throughout 17th and 18th century Europe duelling with rapiers settled "matters of honour".

These days, of course, protective clothing and headgear have removed the "health and safety" risks of fencing - but it has lost none of its excitement and fencing is no longer a male preserve.

With one-to-one tuition from our expert fencing coach, spread over two sessions each of two hours, you'll enter the world of foils, épées and sabres, covering the main aspects of fencing: an ideal introduction for complete beginners. You'll also be introduced to the fencing rules, traditions, techniques and tactics, whilst learning the types of attack and defence.

Tai Chi Experience with Warner Leisure Hotels

Tai Chi experience with Warner Leisure Hotels at Alvaston Hall, Cheshire.

Tai Chi is an ancient way to condition your body.  Every day, all over the world, you will find individuals and groups practising Tai Chi. Where once it was seen as simply an Eastern form of exercise, the benefits to our physical and mental health are now so well documented that all over the Western world, doctors are recommending it as an ideal way to stay fit and increase your mobility.

As people move through a series of slow and synchronized positions, it can look as though they are performing some kind of ritualistic dance. In fact, Tai Chi Chuan, or taijiquan, is the ancient Chinese form of co-ordinated body movements focusing on the cultivation of internal energy "chi" or "qi".

Its aim is to harmonise the mind, body and spirit, promoting both mental and physical well-being through softness and relaxation. When practised correctly, the movements (or form) of tai chi appear rhythmical, effortless and in continuous flow. You will experience this over two three house sessions with our qualified Tai Chi instructor.

The various tai chi postures will gently work your muscles and focus your concentration, improving the flow of the vital life energy that sustains health and calms the mind.

In China, where the people have practiced tai chi for over 600 years, tai chi isn't just a way to condition the body: it's therapy, a preventive measure and a proven way to assist a whole series of conditions including arthritis.
