Tall Ships Race 2010 in Antwerp

In July 2010, the city of Antwerp hosts the start of the Tall Ships Race.  The Tall Ships Races are an internationally acclaimed annual competition organised by Sail Training International and held every summer in European waters. Each year around 80 vessels from 15-20 countries, crewed by some 5-6,000 young people, take part in this unique event that combines four days of activities in each port with racing or cruising-in-company between ports.

The main aim of the event is to provide an opportunity for young people and hence at least 50% of a Tall Ship's crew must be aged 15-25.

The Tall Ships Races 2010 will visit four ports in Belgium, Denmark, Norway and the UK crossing the North Sea with all the challenges associated with such a busy shipping area, while also enjoying the fjords and archipelagos of Denmark and Norway. From 10 July through to 10 August the fleet will enjoy the usual mix of cultural visits, sports, friendly competition and international friendship.

The fleet will gather in Antwerp, an experienced host port that last hosted the fleet in 2006. The crews are always ensured an enjoyable visit to this exciting and interesting city and centre of the diamond industry. The fleet will be berthed along the River Scheldt close to the town centre from 10-13 July before making their way out to an area north-west of Zeebrugge for the race start on 14 July.

DAY 2 Lima
Our tour this morning visits the Miraflores district, known for its parks, beaches and scenic views of the Pacific Ocean, where the Plaza Mayor marks the spot at which conquistador Francisco Pizarro founded Lima in 1535. Visit the cathedral, the church of Santo Domingo and the Gold Museum, a treasure-house of Inca art and artefacts.

DAY 3
Sacred Valley of the Incas Today we fly to Cusco and drive down to the Sacred Valley of the Incas, a peaceful and lush region with magnificent scenery, for a two-night stay at the Hotel Sonesta Posadas del Inca Yucay.

DAY 4
Machu Picchu One of the world’s greatest travel experiences awaits – a thrilling journey by train through the Sacred Valley to the ‘Lost City’ of Machu Picchu, seemingly suspended in the mists of the mountain jungles. We explore this wonderfully preserved citadel in the company of a knowledgeable guide, who will help explain the mysteries behind the temples, terraces, staircases and houses, while we marvel at the dizzying views.

DAY 5
Villages of the Andes to Cusco Today we travel to Pisac, the site of an Inca observatory on the banks of the Urubamba River and setting for a thriving local market. Here, bowler-hatted, pigtailed women sell colourful native handicrafts. At Ollantaytambo, a fine example of Inca town planning and one of the few places where the Spanish were defeated by the Incas, we see the massive fortress built to guard the Sacred Valley. We continue to the Hotel Sonesta Posadas del Inca Cusco or similar in Cusco for a three-night stay.

DAY 6
Cusco & Inca Ruins Cusco was the capital of the Inca Empire. Today we see memorable sights including the Temples of the Sun and Moon; the huge city-fortress of Sacsayhuaman, its monumental stone blocks carved and placed with great precision; and Khenko, a limestone labyrinth covered with intricate carvings. The colour and culture of Peru is brought vividly to life at this evening’s performance of music and dance.

DAY 7
Cusco A day to relax; perhaps explore more of the city where the legacies of the Inca and the Spanish conquistadors are evident. Join your fellow travellers this evening for dinner at a local restaurant.

DAY 8
Train to Lake Titicaca We leave Cusco and take another spectacular train journey travelling first class on the Andean Explorer, which reveals more of the breathtaking Andean landscape. We travel south across the Altiplano, winding through remote high altitude moorland known as puna, and up to Juliaca, enjoying lunch on board as we take in the passing scenery. Our hotel for the next two nights is the Hotel Sonesta Posadas del Inca Puno on the banks of Lake Titicaca, which at 12,500 feet is the highest navigable body of water on the planet and is steeped in Inca myth and legend.

DAY 9
Lake Titicaca As well as the highest, Titicaca must be one of the world’s most enchanting lakes as we’ll discover as we cruise its deep blue, mountainringed waters to the intriguing floating reed islands constructed by the indigenous Uros Indians. This small tribe harvests the lake’s reeds to make countless everyday items. There’s also time in the evening to explore ancient Puno; a great place to buy Peruvian textiles.

DAY 10
Sillustani, Chullpas & Lima We drive up to Sillustani, a remote hilltop Inca site set on a peninsula above beautiful Lake Umayo. Here we can learn about the religious rituals of the Colla people who dominated this region before the Incas. See the well-preserved Chullpas, stone towers where members of the Colla nobility were buried, then visit a local farmhouse to see how native Indians live today. We fly back from Juliaca to Lima, where we stay overnight.

DAYS 11 & 12
Lima/UK Most of the day is free, and a farewell lunch is included before the overnight flight home to the UK, arriving on Day 12.

Please note: This tour visits high altitudes in excess of 12,000 feet, where altitude sickness can occur. Our tour has been designed to allow a more gradual increase in altitude, giving you time to adjust to the lower oxygen levels. Bee-keeping for Beginners Short Break

Would you like a never-ending supply of honey for yourself and your family?  Then Warner leisure Hotels have just the Experience Break for you - A beginners guide to bee-keeping.

For a very small creature, the humble bee produces an extraordinary number of useful things. There's pollen, royal jelly, and propolis, all which are also used for nutritional and medicinal purposes. Mead is a delicious beverage and beeswax is used in candle making, cosmetics, polish and for modelling. And many of us would be sorry to lose the delicious sweetness of honey in our porridge or on our toast.

Bringing all those products to the supermarket and health food shop shelves, of course, is big business. But throughout the country thousands of amateur beekeepers (or "apiarists" to be precise) play a vital role tending for billions of the insects that not only nourish and heal us - but also pollinate our trees, shrubs, flowers and crops.

Our apiarist and tutor Rosemary Proud first became fascinated with bees as a child after many visits to the glass hive of a beekeeper patient of her country G.P. father. But it was not until many years later that the interest became a reality when she was given a hive and beekeeping kit as a surprise birthday present by her daughter. After five years the apiary has a constant 6 - 8 hives and, although a knowledgeable apiaist, she says she continues to learn something new about her bees everyday.

On this course you'll be introduced to a few bee's and the basics of beekeeping! There will also be talks on beeswax and candle making as well as a chance to sample some different honeys. "A bee sting may last for a day or two, but a bee bite will last a lifetime."

It promises to be a fascinating course!

The Perfect Golfing Short Break

If golfing is your passion, then Warner Leisure Hotels have a real treat in store for you: a weekend break during which they take you to two different golf courses in the locality over 2 days, each of them offering a range of different challenges.

All three are 18 holes and all you have to do is bring along your clubs: Littlecote has some superb courses close at hand .

Warner Leisure Hotels will organise your tee times for each course and your green fees. The last round will be a competition between friends - by this time you should really be 'in the swing' of things! - with prizes for the winners.

Handicapping will allow everyone who takes part, ladies and gentlemen, to compete on equal terms and Littlecote's own golf host Jimmy Scott will mentor those taking part - offering advice to anyone who would like to sharpen up their swing or polish up their putting. To make sure everyone's needs are catered for, the break is restricted to just 12 places.

Guests are asked to bring their own equipment and suitable clothing. This is a superb opportunity for golf addicts to meet new friends and playing partners. And if your partner accompanying you is not quite such an 'addict' as you, they'll be pleased to talk through other activities at Littlecote - such as being pampered with beauty treatments in their health spa - that will keep them occupied while you enjoy a fabulous few days.
