Fencing Experience with Warner Leisure Hotels

If you have ever thrilled to the swashbuckling exploits of Errol Flynn as he clashed swords with the Sheriff of Nottingham, or watched in admiration as modern-day Olympic competitors thrust and parry, then you should try this exciting sport with one-to-one tuition from our expert fencing tutors.

And no, you don't have to be a super-fit film star or athlete to really enjoy yourself and gain a solid grounding in this most ancient of sports! The sword is one of the oldest of weapons - Egyptian frescoes from around 1200BC show fencing in action, and when the sword became the principal weapon for the Greek and Roman soldiers, swordsmanship became a sport as well as a vital means of self-defence.

The ability to demonstrate speed, skill, dexterity - and not a little bravery -with a sword has always been considered an indication of manliness and throughout 17th and 18th century Europe duelling with rapiers settled "matters of honour".

These days, of course, protective clothing and headgear have removed the "health and safety" risks of fencing - but it has lost none of its excitement and fencing is no longer a male preserve.

With one-to-one tuition from our expert fencing coach, spread over two sessions each of two hours, you'll enter the world of foils, épées and sabres, covering the main aspects of fencing: an ideal introduction for complete beginners. You'll also be introduced to the fencing rules, traditions, techniques and tactics, whilst learning the types of attack and defence.
